Twisted Lattice Knit Mittens Free Pattern

Introduction

These Twisted Lattice Knit Mittens are a delicate little luxury for your hands: an allover twisted-stitch lattice in soft lavender, finished with a crisp mint ribbed cuff. They are written for experienced knitters who are comfortable working small circumferences in the round and reading a simple four-round pattern repeat. The lace-weight mohair and silk, held double, gives the mittens a featherlight feel and a gentle halo, while the offset rib rounds create a subtle lattice texture that looks far more intricate than it is. Slip them on and they feel airy but warm, elegant enough for a winter coat and simple enough to knit on repeat.

Materials Needed

  • Yarn: Lace weight mohair silk blend (70% mohair, 30% silk), held double throughout. Main color (MC) lavender: 200 yd (183 m). Contrast color (CC) mint: 50 yd (46 m).
  • Needles: 3.5 mm (US 4) double-pointed needles (set of 5), or a 3.5 mm (US 4) circular needle if you prefer the magic loop method.
  • Notions: Stitch marker, 2 stitch holders or waste yarn, tapestry needle, tape measure.
  • Finished size: Women's medium — hand circumference 7 inches (18 cm), length 9.5 inches (24 cm) from cuff to tip.

Abbreviations

  • CO: cast on — make the starting loops on your needle.
  • k: knit stitch.
  • p: purl stitch.
  • k2tog: knit two stitches together — a right-leaning decrease that turns two stitches into one.
  • rep: repeat the instructions in brackets as many times as stated.
  • rnd(s): round(s) — one complete circuit of the stitches in the round.
  • sts: stitches.
  • MC: main color (lavender).
  • CC: contrast color (mint).

Gauge

28 sts and 36 rnds = 4 inches (10 cm) in the twisted lattice pattern, blocked. Knit a swatch in the round in the pattern, block it gently, and count your stitches and rounds over 4 inches before beginning; adjust your needle size if needed to match.

Tips Before You Start

  • Hold the mohair-silk double from a single ball or from two separate balls, but keep the two strands together at all times so the fabric stays even and the halo consistent.
  • The lattice comes from offset rib rounds, so keep your tension relaxed on the purl stitches — tight purls flatten the texture.
  • Try the mitten on as you go: the hand should reach about 1.5 inches (4 cm) less than your desired total length before you begin the top shaping.
  • Because mohair is grippy, use a smooth waste yarn for the thumb holder so the stitches slide off easily later.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Cuff (make 2, one per mitten)

With CC, CO 48 sts. Join in the round, being careful not to twist, and place a marker at the beginning of the round.

Rnds 1–12: [k2, p2] rep to end (48 sts).

Change to MC.

Hand

Rnd 1: k all (48 sts).

Rnd 2: [k2, p2] rep to end (48 sts).

Rnd 3: k all (48 sts).

Rnd 4: [p2, k2] rep to end (48 sts).

Repeat Rnds 1–4 for the pattern, working even until the piece measures 2 inches (5 cm) from the cast-on edge, ending after Rnd 4.

Thumb Opening

Next rnd: k1, place the next 10 sts on a holder, CO 2 sts, k to end (40 sts).

Continue in the pattern as established until the hand measures 1.5 inches (4 cm) less than the desired total length — approximately 8 inches (20 cm) from the cast-on edge.

Shape Top

Rnd 1: [k2, k2tog] rep to end (30 sts).

Rnd 2: [k1, k2tog] rep to end (20 sts).

Rnd 3: [k2tog] rep to end (10 sts).

Break yarn, leaving a tail. Thread the tail through the remaining 10 sts, pull tight, and secure on the inside.

Thumb

With MC, pick up the 10 sts from the holder and pick up 2 sts at the cast-on edge (12 sts). Join in the round.

Rnds 1–8: k all (12 sts).

Rnd 9: [k2tog] rep to end (6 sts).

Break yarn, thread through the remaining 6 sts, pull tight, and secure on the inside.

Make the second mitten identical.

Assembly and Finishing

There is no seaming — each mitten is worked entirely in the round. Weave in all ends on the wrong side, taking care not to pull the mohair too tightly. Close any small gaps at the base of the thumb with the yarn tail if needed. Block both mittens to the finished measurements: soak them briefly in cool water, press gently in a towel, and lay flat to dry, shaping the cuffs and rounding the tips. The mohair-silk will bloom slightly as it dries, softening the lattice texture.

Pro Tips and Variations

  • Swap the mint cuff for a deeper contrast such as charcoal or dusty rose for a bolder look, or work the cuff in MC for a fully tonal pair.
  • For a warmer pair, hold a strand of fine merino alongside the mohair-silk, checking your gauge again before you start.
  • Lengthen the cuff by working extra [k2, p2] rounds in CC — each added round uses very little yarn, so 50 yd of CC leaves room to spare.
