Crochet Baby Pixie Bonnet Free Pattern

CargoFits: Chunky Sweaters, Warm Fits & Knitted Apparel • November 04, 2026

Introduction

This little pixie bonnet is one of those rare projects that looks far more complicated than it actually is. It's made from a single folded rectangle of half double crochet, seamed up the back, and finished with a mustard trim and crochet ties — so even if you've only made a few scarves, you can absolutely make this. The cream wool gives it a soft, squishy feel against a baby's head, while the pointed top and mustard band add a touch of bohemian charm. It's a sweet, quick gift for a newborn or a baby shower, and it works up in an evening or two.

Materials Needed

  • Yarn: Worsted weight (4) 100% wool. Color A (cream): 100 yds. Color B (mustard): 20 yds.
  • Hooks: 6 mm (J/10) for the main rectangle; 5.5 mm (I/9) for the trim and ties.
  • Notions: Tapestry needle for seaming and weaving in ends, scissors, and a stitch marker (optional).
  • Finished size: 0–6 months. Width 14 inches (folded), height 7 inches at the point, ties 8 inches each.

Abbreviations

  • ch — chain: yarn over and pull through the loop on your hook.
  • hdc — half double crochet: yarn over, insert hook in stitch, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through all three loops.
  • sc — single crochet: insert hook in stitch, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through both loops.
  • sl st — slip stitch: insert hook in stitch, yarn over, pull through both the stitch and the loop on your hook.
  • st(s) — stitch(es).

Gauge

12 stitches and 8 rows = 4 inches in half double crochet with the 6 mm hook. Work a small swatch and measure a 4-inch section in the middle — if you have more stitches than 12, go up a hook size; if fewer, go down.

Tips Before You Start

  • Keep your turning chains loose. A tight ch 2 at the start of each row makes the side edges pull in and the bonnet harder to fold neatly.
  • Count your stitches at the end of every row — you should always have 41 hdc. It's easy to lose one at the very end of a row.
  • When you switch to the 5.5 mm hook for the trim, don't skip the hook change. The smaller hook keeps the mustard band crisp and stops it flaring out.
  • Use a wool yarn you'd be happy against a baby's skin, and wash your swatch first so you know how the finished bonnet will behave.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Rectangle (Color A)

Worked with the 6 mm hook and color A.

Row 1: Ch 43, hdc in the 3rd ch from hook and in each ch across (41 hdc).

Rows 2–14: Ch 2, turn, hdc in each st across (41 hdc).

Do not fasten off.

Trim Band (Color B)

Change to the 5.5 mm hook and color B.

Row 15: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across (41 sc). Fasten off.

Back Seam

Fold the rectangle in half with right sides together, matching the short ends. Using a tapestry needle and a length of color A, whipstitch the back seam, leaving the bottom 1 inch open for the neck. Turn the bonnet right side out.

Ties (Color B)

Worked with the 5.5 mm hook and color B, one tie at each bottom corner of the trim band.

Tie 1: Join yarn at one bottom corner of the trim band, ch 25, sl st in each ch across, sl st to the corner. Fasten off.

Tie 2: Repeat Tie 1 at the opposite bottom corner. Fasten off.

Assembly and Finishing

If you haven't already, sew the back seam with a neat whipstitch, keeping the bottom 1 inch open so the bonnet sits comfortably around the neck. Turn right side out and gently shape the point at the top. Weave in all ends on the wrong side, running each tail through a few stitches before trimming. Block lightly: mist the bonnet with water, pat it into shape flat, and let it dry away from direct heat — this opens up the hdc texture and evens out the trim band.

Pro Tips and Variations

  • Two-tone point: Work Rows 12–14 in color B so the tip of the bonnet matches the trim.
  • Softer ties: Replace the chain-and-slip-stitch ties with a simple ch 25 cord, or add a small crochet flower at each corner instead.
  • Bigger sizes: For 6–12 months, add 4 chains to the starting chain and 2 rows to the rectangle, then re-check your gauge before seaming.
