Chevron Diamond Heel-Less House Slippers – Free Knit Pattern

Introduction

These cozy house slippers are a wonderful first step into chevron knitting, and they come together from one simple flat band of fabric. Worked in soft worsted tweed wool in dusty rose and grey stripes, the paired increases and decreases create a wide chevron with diamond columns running down the length. Once the band is knitted, a few quick seams turn it into a heel-less slipper that slips on easily, and a folded ribbed cuff hugs the foot opening for extra warmth. They feel snug, squishy, and wonderfully hygge — perfect for padding around the house or wrapping up as an early Christmas gift.

Materials Needed

  • Yarn: Worsted weight tweed wool (approx. 200 yds / 100g per skein). 1 skein dusty rose (A) and 1 skein grey (B). Total yarn needed: approx. 150 yds (75 yds of each color).
  • Needles: 5.0 mm (US 8) straight knitting needles.
  • Notions: Tapestry needle for seaming and weaving in ends, a few stitch markers (optional), and a tape measure.
  • Finished size: To fit women's shoe size 6–9 (foot length approx. 9.5 inches / 24 cm). Slipper circumference approx. 8 inches (20 cm) unstretched; length approx. 9.5 inches (24 cm).

Abbreviations

  • CO — cast on: make the starting loops on your needle.
  • K — knit stitch.
  • P — purl stitch.
  • k2tog — knit two stitches together: a right-leaning decrease that removes one stitch.
  • kfb — knit into the front and back of the same stitch: an increase that adds one stitch.
  • RS / WS — right side (the outside, public face) / wrong side (the inside face).
  • St(s) — stitch(es).
  • Rep — repeat.
  • BO — bind off: finish the edge so stitches don't unravel.

Gauge

16 sts and 24 rows = 4 inches (10 cm) in the chevron pattern. Knit a small swatch in pattern and measure a 4-inch section; if you have more stitches than 16, go up a needle size, and if you have fewer, go down.

Tips Before You Start

  • Count your stitches at the end of every pattern row. Each chevron repeat uses the same number of increases and decreases, so the count should always return to 72 sts — if it doesn't, a k2tog or kfb was missed.
  • Because the decreases and increases sit right next to each other, keep your tension relaxed on those stitches so the chevron columns stay smooth and don't pucker.
  • Carry the unused color loosely up the side edge rather than cutting it each stripe change; the 2-row stripes are short, so the floats stay tidy and hidden in the seam.
  • Make both slippers from the same two skeins and check that your starting color matches, so the pair looks intentional and symmetrical.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Slipper Band (make 2)

With A, CO 72 sts.

Set-up row (RS): K1, *[k2tog] twice, [kfb] twice, k1, [kfb] twice, [k2tog] twice; rep from * to last st, k1 (72 sts).

Row 1 (WS): Purl all sts (72 sts).

Row 2 (RS): K1, *[k2tog] twice, [kfb] twice, k1, [kfb] twice, [k2tog] twice; rep from * to last st, k1 (72 sts).

Rows 3–4: Change to B. Work as Row 1 and Row 2 (72 sts).

Rows 5–6: Change to A. Work as Row 1 and Row 2 (72 sts).

Repeat: Rep Rows 1–6 for the stripe pattern (A: 2 rows, B: 2 rows) until the piece measures 9.5 inches (24 cm) from the cast-on, ending with a WS row (72 sts).

Bind off: BO loosely (72 sts bound off).

Cuff (worked after seaming, on each slipper)

With RS facing and using A, pick up and knit 36 sts evenly around the foot opening.

Rib rows: Work in k1, p1 rib for 2 inches (5 cm) (36 sts).

Bind off: BO loosely in rib (36 sts bound off). Fold the cuff to the WS.

Assembly and Finishing

Fold the knitted band in half widthwise with RS together. Sew the short edges together to form a loop — this is the back seam. Then sew the bottom edges together from toe to heel, leaving the top 2 inches open for the foot opening. Turn the slipper RS out. Work the cuff as described above, then fold it to the WS. Weave in all ends neatly on the inside. Block lightly to the finished measurements (approx. 8 inches / 20 cm circumference and 9.5 inches / 24 cm length), patting the chevron columns flat and letting the slippers dry fully before wearing. Repeat for the second slipper.

Pro Tips and Variations

  • Add a sole grip: Sew or dot a little fabric paint or a non-slip patch onto the sole area for extra traction on smooth floors.
  • Change the palette: Swap the dusty rose and grey for any two contrasting worsted colors, or work wider 4-row stripes for a bolder look.
  • Adjust the fit: For a longer foot, add pattern repeats before binding off; for a snugger cuff, work the rib for 1.5 inches (4 cm) instead of 2 inches (5 cm).
