Terracotta Split Mittens: Free Crochet Pattern

Introduction

These Terracotta Split Mittens are a cozy, beginner-friendly project for anyone who wants warm hands without losing the ability to text, grip a mug, or turn a key. The split index finger gives you real dexterity, while the solid terracotta body and cream cuff stripe keep things simple and stylish. Worked entirely in single crochet joined rounds, the fabric is dense, smooth, and pleasantly squishy in DK weight yarn. A tiny crocheted button at the cuff adds a desert-boho touch, and the mirrored second mitten comes together in no time once you have the first one done.

Materials Needed

  • Yarn: DK weight (3) yarn, approximately 150 yards total: 140 yards terracotta (Color A), 10 yards cream (Color B). A smooth wool or wool-blend works best for warmth and stitch definition.
  • Hook: 5 mm (H/8) crochet hook
  • Notions: Stitch marker, tapestry needle, scissors
  • Finished size: To fit an average adult hand: 7 inches circumference, 8 inches length

Abbreviations

  • ch — chain: make a loop of yarn and pull it through the loop on your hook.
  • sc — single crochet: insert hook, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through both loops.
  • sk — skip: leave the next stitch unworked.
  • sl st — slip stitch: insert hook, yarn over, pull through both the stitch and the loop on your hook.
  • st(s) — stitch(es)
  • rnd(s) — round(s)
  • MR — magic ring: an adjustable loop used to begin a circle.

Gauge

16 sts and 16 rnds = 4 inches in single crochet. To check, crochet a small swatch in joined rounds of sc and measure a 4-inch section; adjust your hook size if needed to match.

Tips Before You Start

  • Keep your single crochets snug but not tight — a dense fabric keeps hands warm, but too-tight stitches make the finger tubes hard to work.
  • Use a stitch marker at the start of each round so you always know where to join.
  • When you skip stitches for the thumb and index-finger openings, count carefully; those skipped stitches become the bases you join the tubes to later.
  • Make the second mitten immediately after the first while the mirrored placement is fresh in your mind.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Make two mittens. The first mitten is written in full; the second mitten is identical except for the mirrored thumb opening noted at the end.

Rnds 11–14: Repeat Rnd 3 (32 sts).

Split for Index Finger

Rnd 15: Ch 1, sc in next 8 sts, ch 8, sk next 16 sts, sc in next 8 sts, join with sl st to first sc (24 sts).

Index Finger (Color A)

Join A with sl st to any st of the 16 skipped sts from Rnd 15.

Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc in each of the 16 sts around, join with sl st to first sc (16 sts).

Rnds 2–6: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join with sl st to first sc (16 sts). Fasten off.

Thumb (Color A)

Join A with sl st to any st of the 6 skipped sts from Rnd 9.

Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc in each of the 6 sts, sc in each of the 6 ch from Rnd 9, join with sl st to first sc (12 sts).

Rnds 2–4: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join with sl st to first sc (12 sts). Fasten off.

Edging (Color B)

Join B with sl st to top of index finger.

Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc evenly around entire top edge of mitten, join with sl st to first sc. Fasten off.

Button (Color B)

With B, MR 6 sc, join with sl st to first sc. Fasten off, leaving a tail. Sew button to cuff at the join between B and A.

Second Mitten (Mirrored)

Work the cuff, body, and all other sections exactly as for the first mitten, changing only the thumb opening placement:

Rnd 9: Ch 1, sc in next 22 sts, ch 6, sk next 6 sts, sc in next 4 sts, join with sl st to first sc (32 sts).

Continue with Rnd 10 and the remaining rounds as written for the first mitten. The index-finger split (Rnd 15) is worked the same way on both mittens.

Assembly and Finishing

No seaming is needed for the mitten tubes — the thumb and index finger are joined directly into their openings as you work. Sew the cream button to the cuff at the join between the cream and terracotta sections using the yarn tail and a tapestry needle. Weave in all ends on the wrong side, working them through a few stitches before trimming. Block lightly by misting with water and smoothing flat, or steam gently, being careful not to stretch the finger tubes out of shape. Let dry completely before wearing.

Pro Tips and Variations

  • Add a second cream stripe at the top edge or a contrasting edging in a deeper rust for extra desert-boho flair.
  • Work the cuff in a ribbed stitch (such as sc in the back loop only) for a stretchier, snugger fit.
  • Swap the crocheted button for a small wooden or ceramic button to change the look while keeping the same construction.
