Introduction

Meet the Neon Granny Square Bowl Hugger: a cheerful, folk-art inspired kitchen accessory that turns one big classic granny square into a clever four-sided cozy. It's written for beginners, so if you can chain, double crochet and slip stitch, you can make this. The neon yellow, turquoise and magenta stripes look bold and playful on the table, while the cotton fabric feels sturdy, slightly textured and wonderfully heat-friendly. Fold it, stitch it, and it cradles a warm bowl so your hands and tabletop stay comfortable.

Materials Needed

  • Yarn: Worsted weight (4) cotton yarn, approximately 120 yards total: 40 yards each of neon yellow (A), turquoise (B) and magenta (C). Sample uses Lily Sugar'n Cream in Hot Yellow, Hot Turquoise and Hot Magenta.
  • Hook: 5.0 mm (H/8) crochet hook.
  • Notions: Tapestry needle, scissors, stitch marker (optional), a standard 6–7 inch (15–18 cm) diameter bowl for testing the fit.
  • Finished size: Approximately 8 inches (20 cm) square before folding; the folded cozy fits a standard 6–7 inch diameter bowl.

Abbreviations

  • ch – chain
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • dc – double crochet
  • sc – single crochet
  • sp / sps – space / spaces
  • rep – repeat
  • A, B, C – neon yellow, turquoise and magenta yarn

Gauge

4 rounds of granny square = 4 inches (10 cm) square. Work the first 4 rounds, then measure across the square; if it's larger or smaller, adjust your hook size up or down.

Tips Before You Start

  • Cotton yarn gives the cozy structure and heat resistance; acrylic will work but may feel softer and stretch more.
  • Keep your ch-1 spaces snug so the pockets stay firm and the bowl doesn't wobble.
  • Change colors at the join of the last round, then carry on with the new color; the color zones are Rounds 1–3 in A, 4–5 in B, 6–7 in C, 8–9 in A and Round 10 in B.
  • Check the square measures about 8 inches before folding; a bigger square makes a looser hugger.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Assembly

Fold each corner of the square to the center, aligning the corner tip with the center of the square, right side facing out. Sew the folded edges together with a whipstitch using matching yarn, leaving an opening of about 2 inches (5 cm) on one side to insert the bowl. The sewn edges form four triangular pockets that hug the bowl.

Edging (optional)

With right side facing, join C with sl st in any corner sp.

Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc evenly around the entire outer edge, working 3 sc in each corner, join with sl st to first sc. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Assembly and Finishing

Whipstitch the folded edges neatly with matching yarn, keeping the stitches small and even so the pockets sit flat. Weave in all ends on the wrong side, then gently block the finished hugger by misting it and shaping it over a bowl or flat surface; let it dry fully before use.

Pro Tips and Variations

  • Use a contrasting color for the edging to frame the stripes.
  • Make a second square in reversed color order for a matching pair.
  • Add a small hanging loop of chains at one corner for easy storage.
