Chevron Pocket Skirt Free Crochet Pattern

Introduction

The Chevron Pocket Skirt is a cozy, hygge-inspired A-line skirt worked in a soft teal tweed wool with a rippling chevron texture that feels as good as it looks. It's designed for intermediate crocheters who are comfortable with single crochet, sc2tog, and working in the round, but the simple tube construction and easy 16-stitch ripple repeat make it a genuinely approachable project. The coral waistband and hem edging frame the zigzag body beautifully, and two coral square patch pockets add a playful, practical finishing touch. Slip it on over leggings or tights for a warm, textured skirt that drapes softly and moves with you.

Materials Needed

  • Yarn: Worsted weight tweed wool (approx. 200 yd / 100 g per skein).
    • Color A (Teal): 4 (5, 5, 6) skeins / approx. 800 (950, 1050, 1200) yd
    • Color B (Coral): 1 skein / approx. 90 yd for pockets and edging
  • Hook: 5.0 mm (US H-8), or size needed to match gauge
  • Notions: Stitch markers, tapestry needle, tape measure, scissors, rust-proof pins for blocking
  • Finished size: Hip circumference 36 (40, 44, 48) in / 91 (102, 112, 122) cm; length 20 in / 51 cm from waistband to hem; pockets 5 x 5 in / 13 x 13 cm each

Abbreviations

  • ch – chain
  • sc – single crochet
  • sc2tog – single crochet two stitches together (a decrease)
  • 2 sc – work two single crochet stitches into the same stitch (an increase)
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • st(s) – stitch(es)
  • rnd – round
  • rep – repeat

Gauge

16 sts x 8 rows = 4 in / 10 cm in the chevron pattern (one 16-stitch ripple repeat = 4 in wide; 8 rows = 4 in tall). Work a small swatch in the chevron pattern and measure a relaxed, unblocked section; adjust your hook size if needed to match.

Tips Before You Start

  • Count your stitches at the end of every round — the chevron repeat only works if each 16-stitch repeat stays intact, and it's easy to lose a stitch at a valley.
  • Place a stitch marker at the start of each round and at each peak so you can spot mistakes quickly.
  • Keep your sc2tog and 2 sc stitches relaxed; tight valleys and peaks make the fabric pucker instead of rippling.
  • Try the skirt on as you go — the A-line increases are easy to add or skip in 8-row groups to fine-tune the length.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Notes: The skirt is worked in the round from the waist down as a tube. The chevron repeat = 16 sts (14 sc + 1 dec + 1 inc) and 8 rows. Ch 1 at the start of rounds does not count as a st. Waistband is worked in B, body in A, pockets in B.

Waistband (Color B)

Setup: Ch 144 (160, 176, 192), sl st to join without twisting.

Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc in each ch around, sl st to join (144, 160, 176, 192).

Rnds 2-4: Ch 1, sc in each st around, sl st to join (144, 160, 176, 192).

Fasten off B.

Body (Color A)

Rnd 1: Join A in first st, ch 1, [sc in next 6 sts, sc2tog, sc in next 6 sts, 2 sc in next st] rep around, sl st to join (144, 160, 176, 192).

Rnd 2: Ch 1, [sc in next 6 sts, sc2tog, sc in next 6 sts, 2 sc in next st] rep around, sl st to join (144, 160, 176, 192).

Rnds 3-8: Rep Rnd 2 (144, 160, 176, 192).

Chevron peaks and valleys are now established: 9 repeats around for size 1, 10 for size 2, 11 for size 3, 12 for size 4.

Shape the A-Line

Rnds 10-16: Work chevron as established — sc in each sc, sc2tog at valleys, 2 sc at peaks (153, 170, 187, 204).

Rnd 17 (inc rnd): Ch 1, [sc in next 6 sts, sc2tog, sc in next 6 sts, 2 sc in next st, sc in next 2 sts] rep around, sl st to join (162, 180, 198, 216).

Rnd 25 (inc rnd): Ch 1, [sc in next 6 sts, sc2tog, sc in next 6 sts, 2 sc in next st, sc in next 3 sts] rep around, sl st to join (171, 190, 209, 228).

Rnds 26-32: Work chevron as established (171, 190, 209, 228).

Rnds 34-40: Work chevron as established (180, 200, 220, 240).

Approx. 20 in / 51 cm from waistband. Add or omit 8-row groups to adjust length.

Hem Edging (Color B)

Rnd 1: Join B, ch 1, sc in each st around, sl st to join (180, 200, 220, 240).

Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in each st around, sl st to join (180, 200, 220, 240).

Fasten off B and weave in ends.

Pockets (Make 2, Color B)

Setup: Ch 21.

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across (20).

Rows 2-24: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across (20).

Border: Do not fasten off. Ch 1, sc evenly around the entire pocket edge (approx. 20 sts per side, 3 sc in each corner), sl st to join. Fasten off, leaving an 18-in tail. Make 2.

Assembly and Finishing

Block the skirt and both pockets lightly to settle the chevron texture and square the pocket corners. Pin one pocket centered on each front quadrant, with the top edge approx. 6 in / 15 cm below the waistband and the pockets approx. 4 in / 10 cm apart at center front. Using the B tail and a tapestry needle, whipstitch the sides and bottom of each pocket to the skirt, leaving the top open. Weave in all remaining ends securely on the wrong side.

Pro Tips and Variations

  • Swap the coral pockets for a contrast color that matches your wardrobe, or work the pockets in the same teal for a more subtle look.
  • Add a drawstring or a round of slip stitch to the waistband for a sportier finish, or work the waistband in a slightly smaller hook for extra grip.
  • Make a longer midi version by adding two more 8-row chevron groups before the hem edging — just keep the increase rounds spaced evenly.
