Chevron Cup Holder with Mushroom Pocket – Free Crochet Pattern

Introduction

This cozy little cup holder is the perfect beginner project for anyone who wants a quick, satisfying make with big, forgiving stitches. Worked from soft t-shirt yarn in joined rounds, it uses a simple chevron ripple stitch to create gentle peaks and valleys that hug your favorite mug or bottle. The ice blue and silver stripes give it a soft, hygge Halloween feel, and the tiny mushroom pocket on the front is just right for tucking in a tea bag, a wrapped candy, or a little treat. It works up in an afternoon and feels thick, squishy, and warm in the hand.

Materials Needed

  • Yarn: T-shirt yarn (super bulky, about 5–7 mm wide), cotton/elastane blend. Color A (ice blue): approx. 55 yd. Color B (silver): approx. 30 yd. Small amount of white for optional mushroom dots.
  • Hook: 8 mm (US L-11).
  • Notions: Tapestry needle, stitch marker, scissors, pins for assembly.
  • Finished size: Approx. 3.5 in (9 cm) diameter x 4 in (10 cm) tall; fits cups and bottles 3–3.25 in (7.5–8 cm) in diameter. Mushroom pocket approx. 2.5 in (6.5 cm) wide x 2 in (5 cm) tall.

Abbreviations

  • ch – chain
  • sc – single crochet
  • inc – increase (work 2 sc in the same stitch)
  • sc2tog – single crochet 2 stitches together (a decrease)
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • MR – magic ring
  • sts – stitches

Gauge

10 sts x 5 rows in chevron pattern = 4 in (10 cm); one chevron repeat (14 sts) = 5.5 in (14 cm) wide. To check, crochet a small swatch in pattern and measure a 4 in (10 cm) section before starting the holder.

Tips Before You Start

  • T-shirt yarn has very little stretch and a lot of grip, so keep your tension relaxed — tight stitches make the chevron decreases hard to work.
  • Use a stitch marker at the start of each round; joined rounds can drift, and the chevron counts depend on staying aligned.
  • The body narrows upward on purpose (40 sts down to 8 sts). Trust the counts — the ripple shaping is what makes the chevron peaks and valleys.
  • If you want a taller holder, simply repeat Rounds 7–10 once more before fastening off.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Notes: The chevron repeat is 14 sts (2 dec, 10 sc, 2 dec). Work in joined rounds; ch 1 does not count as a stitch. The base and body are worked in one piece; the pocket is worked separately and sewn on.

Base (Color A)

Setup: Ch 4, join with sl st to form a ring.

R1: 8 sc in ring (8 sts).

R2: inc x8 (16 sts).

R3: [sc, inc] x8 (24 sts).

R4: [2 sc, inc] x8 (32 sts).

R5: [3 sc, inc] x8 (40 sts).

Base measures approx. 3.5 in (9 cm) in diameter. Do not fasten off.

Body (Color A, with optional Color B stripe)

R6: sc in each st around, working in back loops only (40 sts).

R7 (A): ch 1, sc2tog, sc in next 3, [sc2tog] x2, sc in next 3, sc2tog, sc in next 3, [sc2tog] x2, sc in next 3, sc2tog (32 sts).

R8 (A): ch 1, sc2tog, sc in next 2, [sc2tog] x2, sc in next 2, sc2tog, sc in next 2, [sc2tog] x2, sc in next 2, sc2tog (24 sts).

R9 (A): ch 1, sc2tog, sc in next 1, [sc2tog] x2, sc in next 1, sc2tog, sc in next 1, [sc2tog] x2, sc in next 1, sc2tog (16 sts). Optional stripe: work this round in Color B for a silver ripple band.

R10 (A): ch 1, [sc2tog] x8 (8 sts). Fasten off A and weave the tail to the inside.

Body should measure approx. 4 in (10 cm) tall and 3.5 in (9 cm) in diameter at the top. For a taller holder, repeat R7–R10 once more before fastening off.

Mushroom Pocket (Color B)

Setup: Ch 6.

R1: sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 3, 3 sc in last ch; turn work and sc in next 4 along opposite side of ch (12 sts).

R2: sc in each st around (12 sts).

R3: [sc, inc] x6 (18 sts).

R4–5: sc in each st around (18 sts).

R6: [sc, sc2tog] x6 (12 sts).

R7: sc in each st around (12 sts).

Fasten off, leaving a 12 in (30 cm) tail for sewing. Pocket measures approx. 2.5 in (6.5 cm) wide x 2 in (5 cm) tall.

Mushroom Cap (Color A)

R1: MR, 6 sc (6 sts).

R2: inc x6 (12 sts).

R3: [sc, inc] x6 (18 sts).

R4: sc in each st around (18 sts).

Fasten off, leaving a 10 in (25 cm) tail. Cap measures approx. 2.5 in (6.5 cm) in diameter.

Mushroom Dots (White, Optional)

Before assembly, embroider 3–4 small straight stitches on the cap to make the mushroom dots.

Edging (Optional, Color B)

Join B at the top edge, ch 1, sc evenly around the top edge (approx. 24 sc), sl st to first sc. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Assembly and Finishing

Pin the pocket to the front of the holder with its bottom edge approx. 0.75 in (2 cm) above the base, centered on a chevron valley. Whipstitch around the pocket sides and bottom with the B tail, leaving the top open. Pin the cap over the top of the pocket, overlapping the pocket's top edge by approx. 0.5 in (1.25 cm), and whipstitch the cap's lower edge to the holder with the A tail, leaving a small opening at one side for a tea bag string if you like. Weave in all ends securely, then gently steam or mist and shape the holder and cap by hand, letting it dry fully before use.

Pro Tips and Variations

  • Swap the silver stripe for a deep purple or charcoal band to lean further into the Halloween look.
  • Make the pocket in a contrasting color and add a tiny embroidered stem for a more detailed mushroom.
  • Skip the pocket for a plain chevron holder, or add a second pocket on the back for a spare tea bag.
