Striped Ripple Avocado Clip Charm — Free Crochet Pattern

Introduction

This little avocado charm is the perfect quick project for anyone who has mastered single and half double crochet and wants to try a ripple (chevron) texture in the round. Worked as a simple straight tube in joined rounds, it uses three shades of ocean-blue t-shirt yarn to create bold horizontal stripes that make the wavy ridges really pop. Gathered at both ends and stuffed firmly, it plumps up into a rounded avocado shape about 3.5 inches tall, with a solid dark blue pit sewn on the front. Clip it to a tote, backpack, or key ring and you have a squishy, durable charm that looks great and feels satisfyingly chunky in the hand.

Materials Needed

  • Yarn: T-shirt yarn (approx. 5–7 mm wide), cotton or cotton-blend, in 3 colors:
    • Color A (light ocean blue): 15 yd
    • Color B (medium ocean blue): 10 yd
    • Color C (dark ocean blue): 5 yd
  • Hook: 6.0 mm (US J-10) crochet hook
  • Notions: Fiberfill stuffing, tapestry needle, scissors, stitch marker, keychain clip (lobster clasp or split ring)
  • Finished size: Approx. 3.5 inches (9 cm) tall and 2.5 inches (6.5 cm) wide

Abbreviations

  • ch — chain
  • sl st — slip stitch
  • sc — single crochet
  • hdc — half double crochet
  • hdc2tog — half double crochet two stitches together (a decrease)
  • inc — increase (work 2 sc in the same stitch)
  • MR — magic ring (adjustable starting loop)
  • st(s) — stitch(es)
  • rnd(s) — round(s)
  • [ ] — repeat the instructions inside the brackets

Gauge

12 sts and 8 rows = 4 inches (10 cm) in ripple pattern. Work a small swatch in the round and measure across the middle; if your stitches are larger than this, go down a hook size, and if smaller, go up, so the finished charm matches the listed size.

Tips Before You Start

  • Gauge matters here. Because the tube is only 24 stitches around, even a small difference in gauge changes the finished size noticeably — check your swatch first.
  • Count your ripple repeats. The pattern is a multiple of 6 stitches, so each round should contain 4 repeats of the bracketed section. Count at the end of every round to catch mistakes early.
  • Change colors cleanly. Change to the new color on the last yarn-over of the final stitch of the round, then join with a slip stitch in the new color for a tidy stripe edge.
  • Stuff firmly but evenly. Add stuffing in small handfuls as you go so the ripple texture stays visible and the avocado keeps its plump shape.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Notes: The tube is worked in joined rounds. The ripple pattern is a multiple of 6 sts. The ch 2 at the beginning of each round does not count as a stitch. Change color as indicated. Gauge is critical for size.

Tube (begin in Color A)

Setup: Ch 24, join with sl st to form a ring, being careful not to twist.

Rnd 1: Ch 2, hdc in same ch, [hdc in next 2 ch, hdc2tog, hdc in next 2 ch, 2 hdc in next ch] rep around, join with sl st to first hdc (24 sts).

Rnd 2: Ch 2, hdc in same st, [hdc in next 2 sts, hdc2tog, hdc in next 2 sts, 2 hdc in next st] rep around, join (24 sts).

Rnds 3–4: Rep Rnd 2 (24 sts). Change to B.

Rnds 5–6: Rep Rnd 2 (24 sts). Change to C.

Rnds 7–8: Rep Rnd 2 (24 sts). Change to A.

Rnds 9–10: Rep Rnd 2 (24 sts). Change to B.

Rnds 11–12: Rep Rnd 2 (24 sts). Change to C.

Rnd 13: Rep Rnd 2 (24 sts). Fasten off, leaving a long tail for gathering.

Gather Bottom

With the long tail, weave through the stitches of the last round, pull tight to close the bottom, and secure.

Stuff

Stuff the tube firmly with fiberfill, shaping it into an avocado form as you go.

Gather Top

With Color A, weave through the stitches of the first round, pull tight to close the top, and secure.

Pit (Color C)

Rnd 1: MR 6 sc (6 sts).

Rnd 2: Inc x6 (12 sts).

Rnd 3: [sc, inc] x6 (18 sts).

Rnd 4: Sc in each st (18 sts). Sl st to join, fasten off leaving a tail. Sew the pit to the front of the avocado.

Edging (optional)

With Color B, sc around the pit edge if desired, join with sl st, and fasten off.

Keychain Clip

Attach the keychain clip to the top of the avocado using a small crocheted loop (ch 6, sl st to form a loop), or sew the clip directly to the top.

Assembly and Finishing

Sew in all yarn ends with the tapestry needle, working them into the inside of the tube so they stay hidden. Sew the pit securely to the front of the avocado, then attach the clip (or loop) firmly at the top, stitching through several times for strength. Lightly steam or mist the charm and reshape it with your fingers to smooth the gathered ends and define the ripple ridges; let it dry completely before clipping it to a bag or keys.

Pro Tips and Variations

  • Color play: Swap the ocean blues for classic avocado greens, or use a single self-striping t-shirt yarn for a no-fuss striped look.
  • Add a face: Embroider two small eyes with black yarn just above the pit for a cute kawaii version.
  • Make a set: Work the tube a few rounds longer to create a larger avocado, or shrink it to a 18-stitch ring (multiple of 6) for a mini charm.
