Mermaid Crown Brioche Bonnet: Free Knit Pattern

Introduction

This little bonnet is made for brand-new babies and the grown-ups who love them. It is knitted flat in two-color brioche, which gives the fabric a soft, ribbed, slightly puffy texture that feels gentle against a newborn's head. Ocean blue and light blue stripes flow into a neutral cream border at the face edge, and three tiny crocheted shells along the front bottom edge give it that whimsical mermaid-crown look. The construction is simple: one rectangle, a short seam, and a few shells, so even a knitter who has never tried brioche before can finish it in a weekend.

Materials Needed

  • Yarn: DK weight (Category 3) merino wool, approximately 50 g each of Color A (ocean blue), Color B (light blue), and Color C (neutral cream).
  • Knitting needles: 4.0 mm (US 6) straight needles.
  • Crochet hook: 3.5 mm (US E-4) for the shell appliqués.
  • Notions: Tapestry needle, stitch marker (optional), scissors, blocking pins and mat.
  • Finished size: Approx. 12 inches (30.5 cm) circumference and 6 inches (15 cm) tall, to fit a newborn head of 13–14 inches (33–35.5 cm).

  • BO – bind off.
  • ch – chain.
  • sl st – slip stitch.
  • dc – double crochet.
  • beg – beginning.

Gauge

16 stitches and 24 rows = 4 inches (10 cm) in brioche stitch. Knit a small swatch in pattern and measure it after a light block; if you have more stitches than 16 in 4 inches, go up a needle size, and if you have fewer, go down.

Tips Before You Start

  • Brioche rows are worked over the same stitches each time; the yarn over you make on one row is knitted together with its stitch on the next, so keep your tension relaxed and even.
  • Count your stitches at the end of every row until the rhythm feels natural. A dropped yarn over is the most common mistake, and it is easiest to fix right away.
  • Change colors at the beginning of a row on the wrong side so the stripes stay crisp and the ends hide inside the seam.
  • Bind off very loosely, or with a needle one size larger, so the cream border stretches comfortably over a newborn's head.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Bonnet (worked flat in brioche)

With Color A, CO 48 sts.

Set-up row (WS): sl1, *yo, sl1, k1; rep from * to last st, k1 (48 sts).

Row 1 (RS): sl1, *brk1, yo, sl1; rep from * to last st, brk1 (48 sts).

Row 2 (WS): sl1, *yo, sl1, brk1; rep from * to last st, brk1 (48 sts).

Repeat Rows 1–2 for brioche pattern, changing color as follows:

Rows 3–8: repeat Row 1–2 three times in Color A (48 sts).

Rows 9–14: repeat Row 1–2 three times in Color B (48 sts).

Rows 15–20: repeat Row 1–2 three times in Color A (48 sts).

Rows 21–26: repeat Row 1–2 three times in Color B (48 sts).

Rows 27–32: repeat Row 1–2 three times in Color A (48 sts).

This gives 30 pattern rows (approx. 5 inches / 12.5 cm) of striped brioche.

Change to Color C.

Rows 33–38: repeat Row 1–2 three times in Color C (48 sts).

Next row: BO all sts loosely (48 sts bound off).

Shell Appliqués (make 3, with Color C and 3.5 mm hook)

Ring: Ch 4, join with sl st to form a ring.

Rnd 1: Ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc in ring, ch 2, [3 dc in ring, ch 2] 4 times, join with sl st to top of beg ch-3 (5 groups of 3 dc, with 5 ch-2 spaces).

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Repeat twice more for 3 shells total.

Assembly and Finishing

Fold the bonnet in half widthwise with right sides together. Sew the side edges from the bottom up to 4 inches (10 cm), leaving the top 2 inches (5 cm) open for the face. Turn right side out. Sew one shell appliqué at center front bottom edge, and the other two evenly spaced on either side, approximately 1.5 inches (4 cm) apart. Weave in all ends. Block lightly to measurements: pin to 12 inches (30.5 cm) circumference and 6 inches (15 cm) height, mist with water, and let dry completely.

Pro Tips and Variations

  • Swap the blues for seafoam green and lavender, or work the stripes in any three colors you like; just keep the cream border for contrast.
  • For a slightly larger bonnet, add one more 6-row stripe repeat in Color A before the cream border, then adjust the seam length to keep the face opening the same.
  • If you prefer no crochet, replace the shells with three small knitted scallops or simple yarn-wrapped circles sewn along the front edge.
