Clover Patch Flat Pouch Crochet Free Pattern

CargoFits: Chunky Sweaters, Warm Fits & Knitted Apparel • October 29, 2026

Introduction

This little pouch is a lovely first step into colorwork-free, shape-based crochet: two simple single crochet rectangles, a tapered flap, and a button closure. It's written for advanced beginners who are comfortable with single crochet, increasing, and seaming, but every step is spelled out so you can take your time. The finished pouch is about 7 inches wide and 5 inches tall, flat and tidy, with three round four-leaf clover appliqués in lichen and moss shades that give it a soft fairycore feel. The worsted weight acrylic makes it sturdy enough to hold small treasures, and the plain single crochet fabric has a neat, even texture that shows off the green palette beautifully.

Materials Needed

  • Yarn: Worsted weight (category 4) acrylic yarn: 100 yd moss green (A), 50 yd lichen green (B), 20 yd dark green (C)
  • Hook: 4.0 mm (G-6)
  • Notions: Tapestry needle, scissors, one button (about 1/2 to 3/4 inch), stitch marker (optional)
  • Finished size: Approx 7" wide x 5" tall (flat)

Abbreviations

  • ch — chain: make a loop of yarn and pull it through the loop on your hook.
  • sc — single crochet: insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through both loops.
  • sc2tog — single crochet two together: a decrease that turns two stitches into one.
  • inc — increase: work two single crochet into the same stitch.
  • MR — magic ring: an adjustable loop you crochet into, then pull closed.
  • sl st — slip stitch: insert hook, yarn over, pull through both the stitch and the loop on your hook.
  • st(s) — stitch(es)
  • WS / RS — wrong side / right side (the outside of the pouch)

Gauge

16 sts and 18 rows = 4 inches in single crochet. Crochet a small swatch in single crochet and measure a 4-inch section; if you have more stitches, go up a hook size, and if you have fewer, go down.

Tips Before You Start

  • Make both panels first and lay them side by side to check they match in size before joining.
  • Keep your turning chains loose so the side edges stay straight and easy to seam.
  • Work the clovers in B and C with a slightly tighter tension so they sit flat and don't curl.
  • Try the button through the chain loop before sewing everything down so you can adjust the loop size if needed.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Panel (make 2, A)

Row 1: Ch 29, sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across (28 sts).

Rows 2-23: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across (28 sts).

Fasten off.

Flap (A)

Row 1: Ch 29, sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across (28 sts).

Rows 2-8: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across (28 sts).

Row 9: Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc in next 24 sts, sc2tog (26 sts).

Row 10: Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc in next 22 sts, sc2tog (24 sts).

Row 11: Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc in next 20 sts, sc2tog (22 sts).

Row 12: Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc in next 18 sts, sc2tog (20 sts).

Fasten off.

Clover (make 3, B and C)

Rnd 1: With B or C, MR, 6 sc into ring (6 sts).

Rnd 2: Inc x6 (12 sts).

Rnd 3: [sc, inc] x6 (18 sts).

Rnd 4: [sc, inc] x6 (24 sts).

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Joining the Panels

Place the two panels together with WS facing. Join A with sc evenly around three sides (left, bottom, right), working through both layers: 28 sts along each side and 23 sts along the bottom. Fasten off, then turn the pouch RS out. The top edge stays open.

Attaching the Flap

With RS facing, join A at the top edge of the back panel and work sc evenly across the top edge (28 sts). Fasten off. Sew the flap to the top edge of the back panel, aligning its straight edge with the top edge.

Button and Loop

Sew the button to the front panel, centered and 1" below the top edge. With A, ch 8 and sl st to form a loop; sew the loop to the point of the flap so it closes over the button.

Assembly and Finishing

Sew the three clovers to the front using the long tails: one centered, and two overlapping slightly below it, alternating B and C as you like. Weave in all ends neatly on the inside. Block lightly by misting with water and shaping flat, then let dry completely before using the pouch.

Pro Tips and Variations

  • Swap the button for a wooden toggle or a small crocheted flower for a different look.
  • Use a contrasting color for the joining round to frame the pouch edges.
  • Make a smaller version by chaining 21 for the panels and working fewer rows for a coin purse.
